Iranian security forces arrested 28-year-old Iranian journalist and weblogger Arash Sigarchi for espionage and insulting leaders of the Islamic Republic. Sigarchi, editor of the daily Gilan Emrooz, had antagonized regime officials with outspoken dissent on two blogs. A revolutionary tribunal in Gilan sentenced Sigarchi to fourteen years in prison. Sa‘id Mortazavi, Tehran's chief prosecutor, ordered Internet service providers to block access to several blogs including Sigarchi's site.

    Afghan journalism student Sayed Pervez Kambaksh has been sentenced to death by an Islamic court for the crime of downloading an Iranian report on women's rights, deemed to be insulting to the court's interpretation of Islam.
